I’ve just published a new song about how we should trust in God at all times, in spite of every encouragement the world gives us to do otherwise.
Story behind the song
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how we are constantly being encouraged to place faith in human beings – be it politicians, scientists, or simply ‘the establishment’. Sadly, I think a lot of Christians have been led astray by this — in fact I think that would have included me until recently. That’s why I wanted to write this song, to help me focus on what’s really important: to trust in God to deal with everything, to submit to him and his direction for my life, and leave the big picture to him.
The words of the first verse are taken from Jeremiah 17:
5 This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who draws strength from mere flesh
and whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
in a salt land where no one lives.7 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
8 They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”Jeremiah 17:5-8
God wants us to trust in him alone, rather than in human beings. Although the world may be a mess at the moment, we can leave it to the Lord to sort out and know that he is in control. It is not up to you or I to sort out the problems in the world – rather, it is our responsibility to obey God and love our neighbour every day.
Sometimes that means we have to wait — the song finishes with the words “we wait in hope for you”, which is taken from the Psalms (33:20, 130:5).

Lyrics
Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who draws strength from flesh alone;
whose heart turns away from the living God:
the wilderness is their home.
But blessed are all those who trust in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
They have no reason to fear the days,
they walk in light that never dims.
Trust in the Lord, oh trust in the Lord,
trust him with all your heart.
In all your ways acknowledge him
and he shall direct your paths.
Kings are not saved by their army’s size,
nor warriors by their strength.
A horse is vain hope for deliverance,
it doesn’t have power to save.
But God shows his favour to all who place trust
in his unlimited love.
He will watch over their ways each day,
and meet all their needs from above.
Each day we’re tempted to give our trust
to powers of earth alone.
The great and the wealthy say ‘trust in us’
instead of the Cornerstone.
Oh Lord, let us not give in to the world’s lies,
keep us remaining in Christ.
He has the words of eternal life,
by his Spirit we have his might.
We wait in hope for you.
