If we are united to Christ, then how do we live? Do we just sit around and twiddle our thumbs? In this session we look at who the Holy Spirit is, what he does, and how God commands us to live by the power of the Spirit.

Why do we praise God? – Exodus 15:1-21 Sermon

After God gave the Israelites victory over the Egyptians, they praised God with the Song of Moses. This song helps us to understand why we should praise God: we, too, can join in the song of Moses.

New life in Jesus – What is Christianity? (7)

Jesus died not simply to forgive our sins, but to give us new life. To become a Christian means to be “in Christ” – which means that we share in Jesus’ death and resurrection. It means that we can live a totally different kind of life.

The army that didn’t fight – Exodus 13:17-14:31 Sermon

“Did you hear the one about the army that didn’t fight?” It sounds like a joke, but it is actually a good description of this passage. In the first battle the Israelites faced together, God was teaching them something very important about what it meant to be the people of God. We as the church need to learn the same lessons.

The rules don’t work – What is Christianity? (6)

People think that Christianity is nothing more than keeping a list of rules – i.e. the Ten Commandments. But that has been tried many times through history, and has failed every time. All you need is to look at the history of Israel.

The necessity of walking together – Exodus 12:31-13:16 Sermon

People often say that you can be a Christian without going to church. This passage helps explode that particular myth – being a Christian is not a solitary endeavour. You can no more be a Christian on your own than you can play a game of football on your own.

From slavery to freedom – What is Christianity? (5)

In this session we look at Moses, one of the most important figures in the Old Testament. He led the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt to freedom. However, this was not simply a historical event: this is perhaps the most significant event in the Old Testament for understanding what it means to be a Christian.

What it means to have faith – Exodus 12:1-30 Sermon

The Passover is one of the most significant moments of the Old Testament – and it teaches us about Christ. Today we are thinking about what it teaches us about faith, how we are to have faith in Christ as our saviour.

The faith of Abraham – What is Christianity? (4)

How bad is sin, really? In this session we start out by looking at just how bad sin is, and then how God started his rescue plan through a man called Abraham. God’s promises to Abraham show what God was intended, and Abraham serves as an example for us.

Humble yourself, or be humbled – Exodus 10-11 Sermon

The Biblical scholar Alec Motyer observed that evil is like a boomerang: the evil that we do comes back to us. God often seems to work like that – we reap a fitting consequence for the evil we have done. In this passage we see what that meant for Pharoah, and how we need to humble ourselves before God or choose to BE humbled.
