Church with UTB and Community update

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I haven’t put my feet up over the summer: I have been busy working on Church with UTB. I am excited to announce that it’s ready to try out! Over the last couple of weeks we have been using the Church with UTB app. This is basically an app which can be used on your computer or on a device e.g. phone or tablet.

Very soon I will be recording a video to show you how to use it, but for now I wanted to flag up that it’s ready to check out.

One thing I am especially keen to do is make it possible for people who live near each other to find one another. I’ve given some thought as to the best way of doing this. I’ve decided that, for the moment, the best way is to add a community forum to the Understand the Bible website. My hope is that anyone who wants to find other people to connect with can post on the forums.

I also hope that the forums will provide a community space to chat about UTB videos and other things. I’ve been involved with forums for a long time, and although they have fallen out of favour on the internet I think they haven’t yet been surpassed as a way of discussing on the internet. (Forums are WAY better than Facebook groups, for example).

You’ll need to create an account, but it’s free and easily done. Why don’t you do so now and introduce yourself?

The disintegration of godless society – Romans 1:18-32 Sermon

What is the problem with the world today? In this sermon, we look at Paul’s hard-hitting explanation of the root problem from Romans 1. The fundamental problem is ‘men have forgotten God’ – they turn away from him. God then gives us over to our sinful desires, which leads to the decay and degradation of society.

Sermons are also available on the podcast.

The power of the gospel – Romans 1:1-17 Sermon

In the first part of a new series on the book of Romans, we think about how the gospel is not simply advice but is the power of God. Paul is called as an apostle of that message, and demonstrates the message in his life.

Sermons are also available on the podcast.

The God who prunes – reflection on John 15:2

Do you have ‘green fingers’? Do you spend hours in the garden? Do you love to watch Monty Don on Gardener’s World? Personally, I have to confess that I know very little about gardens and gardening! I am grateful for the help of my mother-in-law, who is very knowledgeable about such things.

However, one thing I do know about gardening is that sometimes plants have to be pruned. If you leave some plants to grow naturally, they will not bear fruit or flower as much as they could. A wise gardener will know what to prune and when, so that the plant will be as healthy as possible.

To a non-gardener such as myself, the process of pruning might look destructive: cutting off healthy branches seems a strange thing to do! But the wise gardener knows that the pruning is necessary for the plants to grow and stay healthy.

Jesus was aware of this. In John’s Gospel, chapter 15, Jesus says:

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

John 15:1-4

In this passage, Jesus likens himself to the vine, while those who believe in him are the branches. As the purpose of a vine is to bear fruit, so it is with us: we are to bear fruit in our lives. Elsewhere in the Bible, the apostle Paul describes this as the fruit of the Spirit, which is love.

Jesus tells us that the gardener – that is, God the Father – will prune every branch that bears fruit so that it will be even more fruitful.

What does that mean? It means that we need to be pruned in order to grow. We need to encounter adversity, trials, and suffering sometimes, in order that we might bear more fruit in our lives. To a non-gardener like myself, cutting off a healthy branch seems like a strange and counter-intuitive thing to do. But the wise gardener knows it is necessary for the good of the plants.

It is like that with God. In his infinite wisdom, he sends us times of adversity and suffering which is intended for our good and our growth. His desire is always that we might bear more fruit.

How is this helpful to us? I hope that this changes our attitudes when we encounter times of trial and difficulty. The apostle James said, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:2-3). Similarly, the book of Hebrews says: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11).

When we go through testing times, we can have confidence that our heavenly Father is pruning for our own good. However unpleasant it is, we can trust that the Lord is working for our good.

Many Christians through the ages can testify that times of adversity have been times of great spiritual growth. Personally speaking, I can testify to the fact that I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t been through times of trial and adversity.

The key question for us is, how do we choose to respond in times of trial and adversity? Will we choose to be angry with God, and turn away from him? Or will we choose to respond with faith and trust, knowing that he alone is able to turn our every adversity to good?

Church with UTB – summer 2023 update

A few months ago I announced the launch of Church with UTB, which was an attempt to help people start doing church at home. (For more background to my thinking about it, please see my announcement.)

However, I think the initial concept was a bit over-complicated. Over the last few months, I have been doing Church with UTB in our church at home, and I am now ready to put the lessons we’ve learned into practice. I am working on completely revamping the Church with UTB section to make it much easier to use.

In particular, I have been developing an app which will basically provide an order of service each week, including all the videos (songs, sermon), readings, and prayers within the page itself. You will be able to download the app to your phone or mobile device, or you can view it on a laptop or computer. You can take a sneak peek at it by looking here. But please bear in mind that this is still under development and subject to change! Also bear in mind that the content is still only for testing. All that being said, if you do have any comments I’d love to hear them – please leave a comment below or get in touch.

Over the next few weeks, once the App is finished, I will be working on the service itself and looking to develop a Biblical, contemporary service format which can be used regularly.

However, I will be away this coming Sunday (13th August), so there will be no Church with UTB on that day. There are many sermons available on the website – if you’re looking for some Biblical input, why not pick one?

And if you’ve benefitted from Church with UTB, or you would like to use it, please do get in touch and let me know!

Do you take Jesus seriously? – Matthew 7:21-29 Sermon

Do you take Jesus seriously? In the final part of the sermon on the mount, we think about the perils of claiming to be a Christian without taking Jesus seriously. We look at Jesus’ teaching about true and false disciples, as well as his famous parable of the wise and foolish builders.

Enter through the narrow gate – Matthew 7:13-20 Sermon

This is the first part of the conclusion to the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus summarises what it means for us to be his disciples. How should we follow him? And what does he mean about true and false prophets – how should we identify them?

Ask, Seek, Knock – Matthew 7:7-12 Sermon

Jesus’ famous words are all about prayer. But why is it that prayer so often does not feel like what he says – “ask and it shall be given”? Why do so many people find prayer such a struggle? Jesus’ words are here to encourage us to pray.

Perseverance – can you lose your salvation? – Firm Foundations #38

Can you lose your salvation? What do we make of people who were once Christians but are no longer? In this session we are looking at the topic of perseverance. We consider the questions: what does the Bible say about it? What about people who are no longer Christians? And what encouragement is there for us?

Find out more about the Firm Foundations course by watching the Introduction. The previous session (part 36, on Growth in grace) is here.

Do not judge – Matthew 7:1-6 – 16th July 2023

People often take the phrase ‘do not judge’ to mean that we shouldn’t ever criticise anyone else. But that’s not what Jesus intended us to understand. Instead, this is about how we relate to others and deal with sin – especially within the church.
